To celebrate this weekend’s 3/20 Jordan Countdown Pack release and as the first installment of the 23 Reasons Project, Chicago-based artist Kane helped lend his talents to the storefront of St. Alfred’s, located on 1531 North Milwaukee in Chicago. The amazingly detailed artwork features several icons from 1988, namely Michael Jordan’s Dunk Contest winning free-throw line dunk, the Air Jordan III in the colorway to be released this Saturday, a portrait of legendary designer Tinker Hatfield and also the title of Eric B. and Rakim’s classic album, Follow The Leader. A background of cement print caps off the well done work.

My musical tastes range from the catalogs of Wu-Tang and A Tribe Called Quest to underground delights such as Erule and Sick Lyrical Damager. Suffice to say, I don’t stray too far from the 1985-’96 rap scene and ‘70s neo-soul compilations. And I’ll admit it—my introduction to Iron Maiden music came when my ex-chemistry teacher played it in class one day during lab. (This is the same guy who was later caught editing a sexual “highlight” tape that contained footage with over 30+ women that he had failed to gain consent from. And of course, dude didn’t have his own software, so he was using Photoshop and Moviemaker programming. On the school’s computers. This eventually prompted a case that’s moving through Wisconsin courts that questions whether one has to gain verbal consent to be filmed when it’s implied that your partner is consensually naked and sexually active with you. Sigh…only in Waunakee.) However, my murky background with the band does nothing to affect the faithful population that’s extremely interested in hearing that Vans is gearing up to release their third Maiden-themed product. This time around, the brand has freaked their infamous, high-rising SK8 Hi model with graphics from the metal group’s Egyptian-inspired Powerslave album cover. There’s no information available regarding release date or pricepoint.

So while I was under the impression his next album was going to be called something like Good Ass Job or something of those sorts, Kanye flips it and goes the love route. 808’s & Heartbreak will hit stores December 16th! And no, I have no word on the Love Lockdown single being released. I’d imagine today sometime though. But who really knows. Just sit and wait......

The Nikon D700 is Nikon's top new amateur camera. Unless you're a full-time sports, news or action pro, the D700 replaces the D3 for studio, wedding, portrait, nature and landscape pros, as well as all advanced amateur photographers. (I'm a very strict grader for what defines a pro; everyone else is amateur.)

I average 5,000 shots every month on my D3. When I got a D700, there wasn't much difference. The D700 has exactly the same image quality, and handles just a little bit better. I can't say anything better about the D700 than that. The D700 is a D3 with a smaller battery (unless you add the grip) and a cheaper finder screen system, and that's it. The D700 even has the superior rear thumb control of the D3, not the crappy single-piece thing from the D300.

The D700 is a mostly improved version last year's $5,000 camera, for just $3,000. If you want to read all the good things I think about the D700, read my D3 review in its entirety, and read this review simply for what differs between the two.

The thing I missed most in the D700 is the option to shoot in the professional 4:5 aspect ratio, which fits more of my subjects better than the outdated 2:3 aspect ratio of 35mm film and most DSLRs. On my D3, I program the FUNC button to let me chose my framing with one finger without having to take my eye from the finder.

To make up for it, the D700 adds an AUTO option to the Auto Dynamic Range mode, which will probably give the D700 slightly better image quality in difficult light with less twiddling (I leave my D3 set at Normal, since it has no AUTO setting), and more importantly, the D700 added a much needed way to get to my color saturation and contrast Picture Control settings, as well as a way to display the huge INFO panel on the 3" LCD, each with just one tap of one finger on my shooting hand. On the D700, I can get to all the menus with just one hand.

Which is better? If I didn't use the 4:5 mode so often and have a personal issue with the obstructive black AF sensor markers and too-small exposure compensation marks in the D700's finder, it's obvious that the D700 is better so long as you're not shooting action at 9FPS.

The D700 is so good that I'm suggesting people buy a D700, then sell their D3s and pocket the cash. Shoot the D700 until the D3X comes out so that you aren't holding onto a depreciating D3. (see $1,000 off on a D700).

The D700 uses the same image sensor and has exactly the same image quality as the D3, even at ISO 3,200.

The D700 has some subtle, but critical firmware improvements which make it far easier and faster to use than the D3. I can shoot the D700 with one hand, but need to two hands to set Picture Controls and get to the menus in the D3. See my D700 User's Guide for details. In the D700, I can program the FUNC button to call up my Picture Controls, program the power button to call up the rear INFO display, and another tap of the INFO button gets me to other frequently used menu settings. The D3 lacks these options, so it takes a second hand on the MENU button to do all this. Time wasted jacking with more button pushes on the D3 needing an extra hand means missed photos.

Things unique to the D700

"Auto" ADR mode. The D300, D700 and D3 all have selections for OFF, LOW, NORMAL and HIGH. The D700 adds "Auto," which magically selects among them all. It really works.

Ability to program the FUNC button to bring you immediately to your top item in My Menu (CSM f5: Assign FUNC Button > Access top item in My Menu). I set this to Set Picture Control, which lets me select among my various settings of saturation and contrast. This is very important and I wish my D3 did this, because when I photograph things, I use very high saturation, and a second later if I'm photographing a person, I need to set it back to more reasonable colors. If I have the colors set to one or the other, my images are poor and would require post-processing screwing around which would cost me money.

Easy to set the rear LCD to show what's going on, either with the dedicated rear INFO button, or better, by setting a Custom Function (CSM f1) to make the INFO panel appear on the back simply by rotating the power-switch to the illuminator setting. I prefer the more complete INFO display on the large LCD to having some of the information, like ISO and WB, on the second smaller text-only LCD of the D3.

The D700's rear INFO display is superior. It's a masterpiece of interface design that tells me every conceivable option that's set in the camera, all on one screen I can pop on with one touch from my shooting hand.

WB is easier to set than the D3, because it can come up easily on the rear 3" INFO panel and comes up with all the icon in a row on the top LCD. On the D3, the tiny rear LCD has the icons jumbled in no particular order, and it takes a second hand and some logic to get the INFO panel to display on the D3. The D3 takes a moment to display the INFO panel once you figure it out; the D700 does it instantly.

The D700 adds a sensor cleaner lacking in the D3, but present in the D300. UNlike Canon, it only runs when you tell it to so it doesn't slow down your power-on and power-off switching. I don't care, I send my cameras in to the manufacturer one every year or so for cleaning, and FX cameras are much less picky about crud than DX cameras were.

WB is easier to set because you can see it much more easily on either the big rear INFO display (no fiddling required), or the top LCD which has the WB icons in a row. The D3 has the WB icons all jumbled together in no order on the tiny rear LCD, making it slower to get where you need. The D3 requires a second hand to call up the INFO panel.

It's not only smaller, lighter and less expensive than a D3; it's quieter, too.

The Vignette Control defaults to NORMAL.

Thank goodness, the D700 works with every Nikon lens made since 1977.

Every AF, AF-D, AF-I and AF-S lens just works, which is every Nikon AF lens ever made since 1986.

It also meters with AI and AI-s manual focus lenses as does the D3. If you enter the focal length and f/stop, it gives color matrix metering, aperture-priority and manual exposure and correct EXIF data. Whoo hoo, this means you can use the full catalog of manual lenses.

DX lenses work on the D700, but who cares? The D700 is only a 5MP camera with a DX lens, because it only uses the middle of the sensor. It's silly to use DX lenses on the D700; even the D40 has more resolution (6MP) with DX lenses than either the D700 or D3.

Hooking up with Nike for yet another collabo project, New York outfit Dave’s Quality Meat reworks the Dunk High silhouette into a classic solid color wonder. Along with its one color outer, the Dunk High gets a full perforated suede treatment with matching midsole and outsoles. Keeping the theme quite simple, the shoes feature minimal branding with a simple DQM embossed logo on the tongues. The collection coming in three colorways is expected to be a limited release with only 15 pairs of each color available to Parisian shops Opium and colette on September 20th, 2008 with a US release coming shortly after.

Still one of the best written shows on television, the shine definitely started to wear off of Entourage in 2007. The HBO series was the golden child of pop culture at the beginning of the year, and could be seen on the cover of countless magazines and the focus of dozens of TV pieces. If you didn't watch Entourage, you weren't as cool as the people who did. And the show lived up to the hype. The first two-and-a-half seasons of Entourage contained some of the best TV comedy of the decade, a brilliant mix of male camaraderie and behind-the-scenes Hollywood anecdotes. In short, Entourage rocked. But, there's reprecussions to being on the cover of every magazine that the clients of Ari Gold know about all too well - backlash.

The Show: The Entourage backlash began this past summer around the end of the last half of the third season and the start of the fourth. Partially due to overexposure but more due to its protracted plots (the Medellin arc felt like it was never going to end), people started to turn on this excellent series. Is Entourage as good as it has ever been? Not quite. The show seemed to lose just a little focus this year and people were looking for a chink in its armor. Is Entourage better than most shows on TV? Absolutely. There are episodes in the latter half of the third season, now available on DVD, that are among the best 30-minutes aired on TV. "Manic Monday," "Gotcha!," and "The Resurrection," are right up there with the best episodes of Weeds, 30 Rock, or whatever your favorite comedy might be. And, like Vinnie Chase, we believe Entourage can easily reach its peak again and possibly surpass it. Everyone has had their ups and downs on Entourage, even the writers and actors. If you think they're in down, then just wait for the up.

The DVD: As with most HBO DVDs, the visual quality and sound mix on Entourage is nearly unmatched in the world of TV on DVD. The video and audio presentations are perfect. You won't find a single flaw in the picture and the nearly-as-good surround sound track. The two-disc DVD comes with only two special features, but they're both great for fans of Entourage. The "Anatomy of Entourage," a behind-the-scenes bit on the finale will please fans, but it's incredibly short (only around 11 minutes). The better extra is a Museum of Television & Radio Panel from 2006 with the cast and crew. It's almost an hour discussion that provides tons of insight on how the show developed over its first few years. It's a must-have bonus for Entourage fans, who will also find three commentaries. Considering there are only eight episodes, that's an awesome ratio.

Final Thoughts: You're probably not starting your Entourage collection with Season Three - Part Two. To be honest, we still don't get that whole "parts" separation with the last seasons of Entourage and The Sopranos. If you've heard any backlash about Entourage, don't believe all of it. The show is still better than most on TV and HBO gives it the proper home treatment it deserves.

Welcome and bienvenue. This is another noisy slice of Ed Banger-branded electro, as ubiquitous these days as Timberland boots. EB couldn’t be trendier right now, unless it was sponsored by the iPhone and brought to you in HD. In hindsight, the label's world domination always seemed destined to happen – right from the off the artwork, the rock influences, the snug denim et al were all about defining an all encompassing, indie-accessible aesthetic, something which Ed Banger proved very, very astute at.

Unfortunately, maintaining such a conscious “brand” takes a lot of effort. Artists and sounds must fit the mold, otherwise you risk having fans turn on you. For a brand manager, the kiss of death is Dylan-goes-electric artistic waywardness, but clamp down too tightly and you end up with just more of the same, which is the problem with this compilation. Too many tracks here adhere to the generic fuzzy, skuzzy Ed Banger sound.

This is a transient album – one track follows another without any semblance of cohesion. The effect is schizophrenic: one minute you’ve got puerile, attitude-riddled lyrics (Uffie’s ‘Robot Oeuf’), the next unremarkable and gloopy electro (Mr. Oizo’s ‘Minuteman’s Pulse’), the next death-rock curdles that would make a young girl cry (Sebastian’s ‘Dog’). It’s telling that these tracks, which are the worst here, are the most recognizably Ed Banger.

The retro, lazy-ass swagger of Busy P, however, requires a little more attention – ‘To Protect And Entertain’ is analogue-laced hip-hop, not just a straight up Banger, and all the more interesting for it. The same goes for Justice’s ‘Stress’: More delicate than anything else here, it has a cartoon tension which swells until airy riffs surf high on a proggy wave of electro, gushing uncontrollably forth to become, no doubt, a big summer hit.

The urgency of Mr Flash’s ‘Over the Top,’ with its undulating bassy stomps and lofty synth lines is decent, too, proving that there is still quality within Ed Banger’s ranks. ‘No Cow, No Pow’ is a glimpse at the label’s enduring potential - an inquisitive window of glitchy frequencies and vocoders which lure you in and really hit the spot.

There’s a pattern emerging, isn’t there? The more intricate tracks, the ones that stray from the typical Ed Banger blueprint, are the standouts. It seems the less Ed Banger pursue their particular indie/dance brand, the more creativity they allow the artists.

In place of originality, of course, is loudness: your overall impression is of an instantly gratifiying, in-your-face wall of noise. Lack of subtlety never stopped a pop song from reaching the top of the charts, however, and no doubt the relentless of Ed Rec Vol. III will strike a chord with many.

The Nike SB Dunks are the backbone of the Nike SB (Nike SB) line. Nike saw the potential of tapping into the skateboard clothing market because skateboard clothing and sneakers were worn more as casual wear than for the actual sport. The Nike SB Dunks were the same shapes as the Original Nike Dunk but featured a few alterations. Due to physical strain on the foot, good cushioning was a necessity. Also, skateboarding shoes need to have a low center of gravity, so Nike decided to add Zoom Air insoles. Next, thicker padding was added to the areas around the ankle and the tongue. Last but not lease, there was no shortage of material used on the SB Dunks. Double and triple stitching is the norm in the skateboarding shoe industry, so Nike had to step up its design from the original Nike Dunks.

Nike SB Dunks are sold for lower prices when they are first released, but since store owners know the price SB heads are willing to pay to collect Dunks, they tend to inflate prices, sometimes doubling or even tripling the original price. The increase in price depends on the quantity made of a certain shoe and how rare it is, especially when there is much anticipated hype about a shoe.

Sneaker connoisseurs are willing to do more than just pay a higher price for a pair of sneakers they want. During releases, especially limited releases, sneakerheads will sit outside of a store for hours, even days, in any type of weather, in order to have a chance at buying a pair of Nike SB Dunk.
